Opossums are remarkably non-aggressive. Their primary defenses are playing dead ('playing possum'), hissing with mouths open, and drooling excessively to appear sick. They rarely bite even when handled. However, they can carry fleas, ticks, and internal parasites that transfer to pets, plus diseases like leptospirosis in their urine.
Surprisingly yes! A single opossum eats up to 5,000 ticks per season and consumes vast numbers of slugs, snails, beetles, and even venomous snakes (they're immune to many venoms). Key differences: Opossum footprints show five toes on both front and hind feet with spread-out rear digits (like little hands).
